The Fern Life Cycle

The sperm sporophyte consists of lush, finely, divided leaves that arise from rhizome. As you from the moss page rhizoids- are root like hairs. Ferns have these rhizomes. The difference is that rhizome goes parallel to the ground and a rhizoid goes down into the ground.Characteristics of Ferns:

1.Ferns also have Fiddleheads which unroll into the leaves of the fern.

2.Ferns are homosporous-producing only one spore.

3. Now the sex life:

a.The (N) spores are produced by the sori- the red or brown dots on the underside of the leaves.

b.Sorus( The singular form of sori) is a group of sporangia(spore forming organs). The sporangia are sometimes hidden in the indusium- A scalelike cover.

c.When the sporangia ruptures the spores are allowed to become windborne.

d.Later when a fern spore germinates a tiny heart shape forms. This is called the prothallus.

e. Then the sperm forms in the antheridia and the egg forms in the archegonia.
